Also at the campaign Chery held an unveiling ceremony for its new company name. On March 24, 2008, Chery Automobile got the government approval to change its name to Chery Automobile Co. Ltd.
Chery is still awaiting government approval for adding a plant of annual 200,000-unit capacity for producing fuel efficient cars. The project will boost the Chinese automaker's annual production capacity of complete cars to 850,000 units from the current 650,000 units within two years.
The plant will build a new car about the same size as the Toyota Yaris. Fitted with 1.3- and 1.5-liter engines, the Yaris-size model will have three versions: a three-door hatchback, a five-door hatchback and a sedan. No information on the production kick-off date was unveiled.
