China’s automaker Great Wall Motor overseas vehicle sales jump 47% YoY
Beijing (Gasgoo)- China’s top SUV and pickup manufacturer Great Wall Motor (GWM) saw double-digit decrease in sales in September, as industry-wide chip shortage dragged down vehicle production, according to the company’s statement.
Last month, GWM sold 100,022 vehicles, down by 15.1% from a year ago. Its monthly production volume had a slightly larger decline, down by 16.18% year on year to 99,730 vehicles. In terms of the year-to-date volume, sales and outputs of GWM both had nearly 30% growth.
GWM’s overseas sales continue to increase. In September, the company’s overseas sales jumped 47.1% from a year ago to 11,437 vehicles, accounting for 11.4% of its monthly sales. By the end of September, GWM has sold 97,946 vehicles this year in foreign markets, surging 136.3% year on year.
Three major brands from the group had two-digit year-on-year sales decline. Sales of Haval fell 31.04% from a year ago to 54,561 vehicles in September while it made 54,517 vehicles, 31.94% fewer than the same month of last year. Monthly sales of the Haval H6 were 25,409 vehicles while the Big Dog’s sales soared 230.2% year on year to 10,055 units. The brand’s cumulative sales have exceeded 7 million units.
New energy vehicles remained major sales driver in September with 12,770 vehicles sold. The year-to-date sales of those vehicles skyrocketed 254.3% from a year ago. The ORA Hao Mao’s sales hit a record high in September with 5,085 vehicles sold. The model’s total sales in the first nine months amounted to 23,546 vehicles.

Both monthly sales and production of WEY brand were halved in September. But the gap between the output (4,687 vehicles, down by 52% year on year) and sales (4,662 vehicles, down by 48.41% year on year) was very narrow. On September 29, the new-generation intelligent hybrid SUV WEY Macchiato went on sale with a price range from RMB145,800 ($22,599) and RMB159,800 ($24,769).
The company sold a total of 166,726 pickups in the first three quarters while the overseas pickup sales nearly tripled (up by 187% year on year) to 32,566 during the period. Monthly sales of the POER pickup have surpassed 10,000 units for 15 consecutive months. But the pickup production of the company dropped 15.09% compared to the same month of last year.
