Car and City: Toyota honored No.1 auto brand in Guangzhou by Dec. 2021 registrations

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- In Dec. 2021, Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, was credited as the runner-up city in Chinese Mainland in terms of locally-made passenger vehicle (PV) registrations, only following Shanghai.

According to the data compiled by Gasgoo Auto Research Institute (GARI), there were 65,629 homemade PVs registered in Guangzhou, remaining flat over the year-ago period, while representing a 32.3% growth month-over-month.

Among the homegrown PVs registered in Guangzhou in Dec. 2021, 19,061 units were new energy vehicles (NEVs), representing a 121.4% surge compared to the prior-year period. The Dec. NEV registrations were composed of 15,395 BEVs and 3,666 PHEVs (including 806 REEVs).

In terms of ownerships, there were 58,162 and 4,388 locally-made PVs registered by private users and B2B users respectively in December. Besides, a total of 3,041 PVs were registered for car rental service.

Regarding Dec. registrations of homemade PVs, the top 4 auto brands in Guangzhou—Toyota, Honda, Trumpchi, and Nissan—all have manufacturing bases in the city. BYD ranked fifth as the city (Shenzhen) it is headquartered in is very close to Guangzhou. Among the top 10 brands, Tesla and XPeng were the two with only BEV models for sale. Notably, XPeng was the only startup and is also the city's local automaker.

From a product angle, Tesla's two models cracked the top 10 rankings of homemade PV models by Dec. registration. Two AION-branded models—the AION S and the AION Y—ranked 2nd and 4th. The other 6 models were from the 3 joint ventures, namely, GAC Toyota, GAC Honda and Dongfeng Honda.

By Dec. new energy passenger vehicle (NEPV) registrations, the most popular auto brand in Guangzhou was Trumpchi, the self-owned PV marque of GAC Group. BYD ranked 2nd with 3,428 NEPVs registered. Three Chinese startups—XPeng, Li Auto, and NIO—were all among the top 10 brands.

Among NEPV models, the top 4 spots by Dec. registrations were evenly occupied by GAC AION and Tesla’s products. Both XPeng P7 and P5 were on the top 10 NEPV models list.
