The 2,133 VW vehicles, including the Passat, New Touran and Skoda Octavia brands under the German carmaker, had been delivered to Beijing in 10 batches. The first batch of 291 new Touran cars made by Shanghai VW arrived in Beijing on June 23, followed by the other vehicles in the next 10 days. The long-distance transportation of such a large car fleet is seen as a demanding logistic project for the carmaker.
The Passat, new-generation Touran and Skoda Octavia are the star brands of Shanghai Volkswagen. The Passat sedan has been a benchmark model in China's mid- to high-end auto market, the new Touran car features a mix of sedan's comfort and MPV's multi-purposes, and the Skoda Octavia is a state-of-the-art Skoda model simultaneously made in China with VW facilities in other countries. These vehicles of Shanghai VW will be used for ferrying Olympics athletes and officials and for other related services during the upcoming summer Games.
Volkswagen Group China became the automobile partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) announced in Beijing on June 10, 2004.
