Engine-maker Yuchai plans to make diesel cars
Shanghai, July 18 (Gasgoo.com) China's diesel engine maker Yuchai Group is planning to manufacture diesel passenger cars over the next few years, reported Automotive News China yesterday. The project in the pipeline is expected to make 150,000 diesel cars annually.
According to documents posted on the website of the Guangxi provincial government's Development and Reform Commission, Yuchai Group is looking to invest 2.5 billion yuan (US$367 million) in the project between 2010 and 2015. The documents said that the manufacturer of diesel engines was hoping to achieve an annual production capacity of 150,000 units of 0.9L and 1.3L diesel minicars after the project starts operation.
According to an engineer of the company, Yuchai will soon start testing the 3- and 4-cylinder engines in local taxis, though the project is still in the early stages. The use of diesel is not widespread in China's passenger cars, but any powertrain option that helps reduce fuel consumption would be well received by the Chinese government that has been urging energy-efficiency and low emissions.
The Yuchai Group, located in Yulin city of South China's Guangxi province, has a strong tradition of manufacturing diesel engines for commercial vehicles and engineering machinery. The company sold around 500,000 diesel engines in 2007, and it has developed a 1.2-liter engine (code-named YC4W) to be used in a passenger car with Germany's FEV Engine Technology.
