Great Wall Motor hits wall in Italy

From SinoCast| July 23 , 2008 08:38 BJT

Great Wall Motor Co., Ltd., a Chinese homegrown carmaker, has just been banned on exporting Peri cars to Italy.

Peri, a small car model, is the first sedan model of the Chinese carmaker, which specializes in SUVs and pick-up trucks. The court in Torino of Italy made a verdict that the Chinese company was forbidden to export Peri cars to the country because it thought the company copied the car model of Panda of Fiat Automobile SpA on its car model.

The Chinese company will be fined EUR 15,000 on export of each Peri car if it insists to sell the cars to the country and other European countries.

Peri, with a 1.3L engine, resembles Panda in doors, roof, backboard and even the whole body except changes in headlight and bumper.

The case warned that Chinese homegrown carmakers, which attempt to tap into the oversea market, should improve the technical contents of their products rather than rely on the advantage of low prices.
