JingChi.ai, Guangdong Unicom to co-built 5G innovation lab based on L4 self-driving tech

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Chinese autonomous driving startup JingChi.ai and Guangdong Unicom, a subsidiary of China Unicom, announced on Sept. 26 the strategic partnership on 5G networks and applications. Both parties agreed to build the "5G Joint Innovation Lab" based on L4 self-driving technologies. 

At the launching ceremony, JingChi.ai and Guangdong Unicom showcased the remotely-controlled self-driving vehicle, a 5G network-based vehicle carrying L4 self-driving technologies. 

Under the cooperation, both companies will jointly work on such businesses as the testing and development of 5G application scenarios, the development of data center services and edge computing applications, the exploration for commercializing 5G application scenarios as well as the construction of V2V- and V2X-based intelligent traffic and smart city systems, etc.

Moreover, Guangdong Unicom deploys 5G networks fully covering the Guangzhou International Bio Island for JingChi.ai developing and testing its self-driving vehicles.

According to JingChi.ai, the human intervention is indispensable when a self-driving car comes across some “extreme situations” beyond control. Thus, it develops the remote controlling system to let human take over the vehicle controlling rights in accidental occasions. Using 5G networks, the responding ability for the system remotely controlling a vehicle will be largely improved over using 4G networks under same conditions. Besides, the latency time will be shortened to less than 10 milliseconds as well.
