Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Beijing is going to launch key demonstration initiatives for 5G-based IoV (Internet of Vehicles) applications and build IoV-focused operational platform, according to the White Paper on the Development of Beijing's 5G Industry (2019) released at the 2019 World 5G Convention on November 22.

The capital of China will have 14,000 5G base stations built by the end of the year to achieve continuous coverage within the city’s Fifth Ring Road, said the white paper. As of October, 2019, the country's three largest telecommunications operators—China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom—had constructed around 11,000 5G base stations in Beijing.

Some progresses have been made in the construction of Beijing's 5G application scenarios, whereas the overall industry is still in the phase of further study, testing and pilot applications. With the fast development of 5G technologies and the acceleration of industrialization, the implementation plan on 5G technical applications should be further polished. Such domains as intelligent transportation, smart health care and industrial Internet should be highlighted in term of 5G practical application.

The white paper said Beijing planned to build a 5G-based IoV system to vigorously promote the development of intelligent transportation featuring vehicle-infrastructure cooperative system. Notably, a market-driven IoV operational platform would be established to offer data support to mobility service, intelligent traffic management and smart city operation.

Beijing is one of the cities in China that take the lead in construction of 5G-based IoV system, with some regions having started relevant applications in remote and autonomous driving fields. As early as 2018, Beijing's authority issued a white paper, clarifying that the value of the ICV (intelligent-connected vehicle) and other related industries in the city would surpass RMB100 billion by 2022.

Besides, a governmental plan issued at the end of 2018 also pointed out Beijing would promote the building of ICV-used infrastructures and relevant monitoring, testing and elevation systems on some expressways, such as Yanchong Expressway, Jingxiong Expressway and Daxing Airport Expressway, with the range spanning 2,000 kilometers by 2022 (photo source: 2019 World 5G Convention).
