Summary: Best-selling SUVs in China from January to April

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - Statistics compiled by Gasgoo.com (Chinese) reveal that 2.57 million SUVs were sold in China from January to April. That figure represents year-on-year growth of 46.2%. SUVs made up 36.0% of all vehicles sold in China over the first four months of this year, up 26.7% year-on-year. As sedan sales continue to fall and minivan sales have only been growing slightly, SUVs continue to be the major driver for sales growth in the Chinese automotive market.

The Great Wall Haval H6 was the best-selling Chinese SUV from January to April, followed by the SAIC-GM-Wuling Baojun 560, GAC Trumpchi GS4,VW Tiguan, Changan CS75, Buick Envision, JAC Refine S3, Changan CS35, Honda CR-V and Brilliance Zhonghua V3. Seven of those models were made by domestic own brand manufacturers.

Two models were able to achieve sales of over 10,000 units during the four month time period. The Haval H6 and Baojun 560 achieved sales of 165,271 units and 138,012 units, respectively. The Haval H6 continues to lead the rest of the market by a sizable margin, with its sales increasing 39.5%. A total of 43,946 Haval H6ss were sold in April alone, representing year-on-year growth of 42.8% and surpassing the ever-popular SAIC-GM-Wuling Hongguang. Meanwhile, despite being on the market for less than a year, the Baojun 560 has made the top three monthly sales charts multiple times.

Sales of the Changan CS75 from January to April totaled 76,736 units, up 36.7% year-on-year. This one model has played an important role in helping Changan maintain its strong sales performance. January to April sales of the fellow CS35 totaled 66,696 units, up 7.4% year-on-year.

The JAC Refine S3 managed to accumulated total sales of 74,911 units, representing positive year-on-year sales growth of 13.0%, while the Brilliance Zhonghua V3 achieved sales of 52,653 units over the same time period. Brilliance has announced a new redesign of its Zhonghua V3 this year, as well as released a new pure electric version at the Auto China show in Beijing.

Only three Sino-foreign joint venture models—the VW Tiguan, Buick Envision and Honda CR-V—made the top ten sales chart. Four-month sales of the Tiguan totaled 77,288 units, up 12.8% year-on-year. Sales of the Envision over the same time period totaled 76,646 units, nearly double from last year. With the Envision creeping up on the Tiguan, it may succeed in overtaking the German SUV in the coming months. Meanwhile, sales of the CR-V totaled 56,405 units, representing year-on-year growth of 53.8%. 15,533 CRVs were sold in April alone, up 46.4% year-on-year.
