Summary: Best-selling passenger automobile models in August

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - According to statistics compiled by Gasgoo.com (Chinese), a total of 1.75 million passenger automobiles were sold in China in the month of August. That figure represented commendable year-on-year growth of 28.5%, similar to growth records from the previous month.

SAIC-GM-Wuling’s Hongguang continues to lead the monthly sales charts with total sales of 45,381 units. Although the Hongguang has been pulling in monthly sales volumes above the 40,000 mark, its total sales from January to August have actually decreased slightly from the previous year. SAIC-GM-Wuling’s other MPV, the Baojun 730, has seen its sales begin to recover, ranking seventh in the monthly sales charts with 28,928 units sold. By comparison sales of the Baojun 560 have actually fallen 11.6%, totaling 15,112 units in August.  

Great Wall’s flagship model, the Haval H6, has managed to once again break the 40,000 sales mark this year. With its sales growing 49.4%, the model’s dominant position in the SUV segment is irrefutable. Quite some distance behind the H6 was the month’s second best-selling SUV, GAC Trumpchi’s GS4. August sales of the Trumpchi over doubled from last year, totaling 29,000 units.

Sedans made up six of the top 10 best-selling models, with their individual monthly sales all above the 20,000 sales mark. Among them, the Jetta, Lavida and Excelle were able to break the 30,000 sales marks, while the Corolla was able to achieve triple-digit sales growth year-on-year.

A total of 238 sedan models were sold in the country in August. Sedan sales for the month totaled 917,000 units, representing year-on-year growth of 19.6%. The Jetta surpassed the Lavida with sales of 36,577 units to become the month’s best-selling sedan model. Ranking behind the Jetta and Lavida were the Excelle, Bluebird Sylphy, Sagitar, Corolla, Escort, Bora, Lavida and Cruze. Both the Corolla and Escort manage to achieve some very commendable sales growth rates in the triple digits.

The Chery Arrizo 5 was the month’s best-selling own brand sedan. August sales of the Arrizo 5 totaled 16,800 units, ranking 11th in the overall segment sales charts. The Arrizo 5, which launched only this March, has seen its sales rise steadily month after month. A total of 63,208 Arrizo 5s have been sold over the first eight months of the year. The month’s other top-selling own brand sedan, the Geely Emgrand EC7, also performed strongly, with its August sales totaling 13,525 units, representing year-on-year growth of 14.8%. No other own brand models ranked in the segment’s top 20 sales charts.

A total of 137 SUV models were sold in the country August. A total of 665,000 SUVs were sold in the country in August, representing year-on-year growth of 42.3%. Six of the top ten best-selling SUV models in August came from domestic own brand manufacturers, while the remainder were made up of individual entries from American, German, Korean and Japanese brands.

As before, the Great Wall Haval H6 continued to lead the segment by a large margin. The GAC Trumpchi GS4 also performed strongly, with its sales nearly doubling from the previous year. A total of 29,000 GS4s were sold in August. Other top-selling own brand SUVs for the month included SAIC-GM-Wuling’s Baojun 560, the Changan CS75, the Great Wall Haval H2 and the Changan CS35. Among those, only the CS75 managed to achieve positive sales growth.

The month’s best-selling foreign brand SUV, the Buick Envision, ranked third in the SUV sales charts with sales of 22,050 units. Although sales of the VW Tiguan has been seeing strong recovery over the past few months, its sales in August fell 14.1% year-on-year. The New Tucson, which has only been on the market for less than a year, has performed strongly, with its August sales of 17,146 units allowing it to rank in the monthly top ten.

A total of 43 MPVs were sold in China in August. MPV sales for the month totaled 177,000 units, representing year-on-year growth of 31.9%. The SAIC-GM-Wuling Hongguang led the sales charts, followed by the Baojun 730, Changan Honor, Changan Oushang, BAIC Weiwang M30, Buick GL8, BAIC Huansu H3, Dongfeng Fengxing S500, Dongfeng Fengxing Lingzhi and Jinbei 750. These ten models accounted for 42.3% of all MPVs sold in the country.
