Summary: Best-selling passenger automobile models in September

A total of 416 automobile models were sold in China over the course of September. Passenger automobile sales for the month totaled 2.22 million units, up 30.4% units sold in September 2015 and up 26.5% from August 2016. SAIC-GM-Wuling’s Hongguang and the Great Wall H6 continue to lead the overall sales charts with over 50,000 units sold over the course of the month. Sales of the Hongguang totaled 56,758 units. However, sales of the Hongguang have yet to reach the same level as last year. Meanwhile, sales of the Haval H6 totaled 53,268 units, marking a new monthly sales record for the model and representing year-on-year growth of 74.5%. The third-place entry, SAIC-GM-Wuling’s Baojun 730, managed to accumulate sales of 41,365 units, up a full 88.3% year-on-year.

A total of 239 sedan models were sold in September. Sedan sales for the month totaled 1.11 million units, representing year-on-year growth of 20%. The VW Lavida led the sales charts with a total 39,726 units, followed by the Nissan Bluebird Sylphy, whose sales totaled 37,657 units. The top five sedan models managed to all achieve sales of over 30,000 units in September. Sedan models accounted for six of the month’s top ten best-selling automobile models, with all of them managing to achieve double digit sales growth rates. Among them the VW Jetta performed especially strongly, with its sales growing a full 86% year-on-year. 

Geely’s Emgrand EC7 was the month’s best-selling own brand sedan model, ranking 11th place with sales of 20,198 units and year-on-year growth of 25%. Other strongly performing own brand sedan models included the Changan Eado, Chery Arrizo 5, Geely Vision and BYD F3.

Sales statistics for September included 135 SUV models. A total of 881,000 SUVs were sold in the country over the course of the month, representing year-on-year growth of 58.4%. Own brands performed especially strongly in the segment, with six of the country’s 10 top-selling models being Chinese brands; the remainder were made up of individual entries from American, German, Korean and Japanese brands.

In addition to the Great Wall Haval H6, still the country’s best-selling SUV, other strongly performing own brand SUVs include the Changan CS75,SAIC-GM-Wuling Baojun 560, JAC Refine S3 and Great Wall Haval H2.

A total of 42 MPV models were on the Chinese sales charts in September. MPV sales for the month totaled 221,000 units, representing year-on-year growth of 51.1%. Ranking right after the Hongguang was the Baojun 730, whose sales grew a full 88.3% year-on-year. The top ten best selling MPV models accounted for 77.8% of all MPVs sold in the country in the month.
