Car and City: Shenzhen tops other Chinese cities by Model 3, Model Y registrations in Jan. 2023
In the first month of 2023, there were 27,207 China-made Tesla-branded vehicles registered across the Chinese mainland, representing a 34.7% decrease compared to the previous month, according to the data compiled by Gasgoo Auto Research Institute ("GARI").
Nevertheless, amid the overall downturn in China’s auto market mainly due to the Spring Festival holiday, Tesla still saw its Jan. registrations of made-in-China vehicles leap 38.8% year-on-year in the world’s largest auto market.
The significant year-on-year rise entirely owned to the 311.98% surge in the monthly Model 3 registrations, which came in at 12,829 units in Jan. 2023. The Shanghai-made Model Y recorded a 12.84% year-on-year decline with 14,378 units registered last month.
Regarding the monthly registrations of China-made new energy vehicles (NEVs) in Jan. 2023, Tesla was credited the runner-up among all auto brands in China.
Among all locally-built NEV models sold in China, the Model Y and the Model 3 ranked 4th and 6th by Jan. 2023 registrations, respectively.
With regard to regional distribution in Jan. 2023, Shenzhen ranked highest among cities in China with 1,014 made-in-China Model 3s registered, while both Shanghai and Hangzhou had 868 Model 3s registered.
In terms of the Jan. registrations of the homemade Model Y, there were four cities with over 700 units registered each. Of those, Shenzhen was still the champion with a registration volume of 1,146 Models Ys.
