BYD to begin mass pilot applications of all-solid-state batteries in vehicles around 2027

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On February 15, at the 2nd China All-Solid-State Battery Innovation and Development Summit Forum, Sun Huajun, CTO of Shenzhen BYD Lithium Battery Co., Ltd., announced that BYD plans to begin mass demonstration applications of all-solid-state batteries in vehicles around 2027, with large-scale adoption expected after 2030.

Last September, Mr. Sun emphasized BYD's commitment to advancing next-generation battery technologies, including solid-state batteries and new materials. He highlighted sulfide-based solid-state batteries as a key direction, noting that they offer breakthroughs in battery lifespan and fast-charging capabilities.

According to Mr. Sun, the period from 2027 to 2029 will serve as a demonstration phase for sulfide-based solid-state batteries, primarily targeting mid-to-high-end electric vehicles. From 2030 to 2032, these batteries will enter an application expansion phase, becoming widely adopted in mainstream electric vehicle models.

Lian Yubo, BYD's Chief Scientist, Chief Automotive Engineer, and director of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute, has also disclosed that the company has been conducting extensive research on solid-state batteries. Regarding their large-scale adoption, Mr. Lian predicted that the first three years would be particularly challenging, while a five-year timeframe would be more realistic for widespread implementation.

Mr. Lian further stated that due to cost constraints and material supply considerations, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries will not be phased out within the next 15 to 20 years. Instead, solid-state batteries will primarily be used in high-end models, coexisting with LFP batteries to cater to different vehicle segments.
