Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Beijing Benz, a Sino-German joint venture, launched the GLB—its seven-seater compact SUV—available with three variants priced between 314,800 and 354,800 yuan ($44,783-50,473). The first compact SUV from Mercedes-Benz to offer a third row of seats on request with two additional individual seats, is going to compete with the BMW X1, the Audi Q3 and the Volvo XC40.

The JV's spacious family model (length/width/height/wheelbase: 4,638/1,834/1,687/2,829 mm) is built on Mercedes front-wheel-drive architecture (MFA). It is equipped with the permanent all-wheel system 4MATIC, with fully-variable torque distribution. The SUV carries 1.3T engine that pumps out up to 250 N•m paired with 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT). In the future, the company is expected to offer the GLB 260 version outfitted with 2.0T engine and the GLB 35 AMG is also supposed to sell in China.

With regard to its exterior, the powerful proportions of the GLB accentuate the design with its off-road orientation: the surfaces of the forms are highlighted and reduced lines and precise seams are major features. The upright front section with its impressive headlight is clear evidence of off-road genes, as are the short overhangs at the front and rear.

The muscular and sensuously contoured vehicle shoulder dominates the side view at the height of the C-pillar, an effect enhanced by the rising waistline. The doors reach over the side bar, promoting ease of access, and keep the door apertures free of soiling as well as increasing protection in a side impact.

Inside the vehicle, the instrument panel, consisting of a single piece, has optical cut-outs in the driver and front passenger area. The driver faces a 10.25-inch screen cockpit, with control and display via MBUX (Mercedes-Benz user experience). A new spotlight is the typical off-road tubular element in an aluminum look, which rounds off the lower section of the instrument panel and houses the three round center air vents (photo source: Mercedes-Benz).
