Toyota’s U.S. sales in February 2010 totaled 100,027 vehicles, an 8.7% drop from last year. While this result is better than most market predictions, it does not signal an end to the most severe recall crisis in the company’s history. While the root cause of Toyota’s massive accelerator recall problem is still under investigation, the problem is more likely inherent in the design of the overall system which is found in several of Toyota's most popular vehicles. It should also be noted that this is just one of several recent quality spills that Toyota has been addressing, which indicates a much more systemic problem within the Toyota Motor Corporation than just this particular issue. In the aftermath of the accelerator recall crisis, Toyota must confrontthe immediate consequence of sales declines and declining margins, and begin a long journey to restore consumer trust.
