Honda is recalling 585 2010 Elements because of a defect in the shift-lever cable. The automaker also has issued a stop-sale order effective until August 13 on 2010 Elements built between April 1, 2010 and June 25, 2010, according to documentation filed by Honda with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The cable that connects the shift lever to the transmission was not set correctly at the shift lever bracket," said NHTSA in its recall summary of the problem. "As a result, the driver may move the gearshift lever, but the transmission may not be placed in the selected gear. This can cause the key to be stuck in the ignition switch, an inability to shift into or out of Park or an inability to shift into Reverse, increasing the risk of a crash."
Honda told NHTSA that it has contacted some owners of the affected Elements by phone and arranged to have their vehicles repaired. All other owners will be notified by mail. Honda dealers will correctly set the shift-cable bushing. The recall is expected to begin on August 9. Honda Element owners can contact the automaker at (800) 999-1009.
