Gasgoo.com (Shanghai February 21) - Beijing will install 50,000 new public parking spaces as part of its five-year program to promote 'civilized driving habits,' the Beijing Times reported today. The program aims to tackle the city's so-called 'ten most serious traffic violations.' The 50,000 public parking spaces will be part of a total 200,000 planned to be constructed in order to ease traffic congestion.

The enforcement authorities in charge of the program will intensify efforts to tackle the ten traffic violations, including drunk driving, running of red lights and driving without a license. Stringent measures will be taken against vehicles fleeting these regulations, specifically against those that commit serious offenses such as blocking emergency or public lanes.

The city will also revise parking management rules to target vehicles which park in illegal spaces, with violators blocking roads or access to important facilities such as hospitals or schools receiving the strictest punishments. Authorities will expand the law enforcement force to ensure that intersections will be under constant inspection.

Furthermore, examination and verification will be undertaken at the municipal and regional levels to ensure that the level of traffic management reaches the highest standards, with action being taken against those departments or units whose performance is clearly lacking. The city hopes that citizens will also do their part in curbing traffic violations, in order to nurture a better overall environment for Beijing.
