Shanghai, March 29 (Gasgoo.com) U.S. auto parts giant BorgWarner Inc. opened a new technical center in Shanghai last week, media reported over the weekend.

The facility, located in Zizhu Science Park is expected to become the largest in the company's network of global technical centers within two years by ultimately employing 400 people who will work to research and develop engines and drivetrains.

The tech center will be BorgWarner's sixth location in China. It already has four joint-venture locations that manufacture transfer cases, dual clutch transmissions, fans and transmission components. BorgWarner, based in Auburn Hills, Mich., first entered China in 1993.

"BorgWarner has experienced tremendous growth in China," said BorgWarner CEO Tim Manganello. "Opening the BorgWarner China Technical Center represents another great milestone in our global success and reflects our participation in the growth of the Chinese economy."

BorgWarner Inc expects compound annual sales growth of 45% in China until at least 2014, when more than 15% of the company's sales will come from China, compared with about 12% now, said the chief executive.

China surpassed the United States to become the world's largest auto market last year, with sales surging 45% to 13.6 million vehicles. Global and local automakers are expanding China operations to meet growing demand.
