BYD's Brazil plant rolls out 100,000th NEV as workforce tops 5,500

Gasgoo Munich- BYD's manufacturing complex in Brazil reached two milestones on July 16, producing its 100,000th new energy vehicle while expanding its workforce to more than 5,500 employees. The milestone vehicle was a BYD Dolphin Mini, the name under which the Seagull is marketed in Brazil. The developments underline the rapid production ramp-up at the site and BYD's growing reliance on local hiring as it expands its presence in the country.

Located in Camaçari, Bahia state, the complex represents an investment of around 5.5 billion Brazilian reais and spans 4.68 million square meters, according to BYD's Brazilian subsidiary. Its first phase is designed to produce 150,000 vehicles annually, with capacity eventually expected to reach 600,000 units. The site also includes a local assembly line for BYD's Blade Battery.

Construction and preparations for production took 15 months. BYD is now working to establish a broader domestic supply base and aims to source 50% of components locally by early 2027.

Li Tie, general manager of BYD Brazil, said the plant had ramped up output faster than initially anticipated. The automaker's next priorities include strengthening its network of local parts suppliers and recruiting more workers for technical positions.

The site occupies a former automotive manufacturing complex that had stood idle after its previous operator ended production. The man, who became the plant's 5,500th employee, said BYD's arrival had helped revive local employment and demand for supporting services.

The Camaçari facility is also expected to support BYD's vehicle exports from Brazil. Publicly available information indicates that the company secured orders totaling 100,000 vehicles from Argentina and Mexico in March, with some of those deliveries set to be supplied by the Brazilian plant.

However, manufacturing capacity is only one part of BYD's expansion equation. Electric-vehicle infrastructure remains uneven across South America, and the ability of local charging networks and aftersales services to keep pace with rising vehicle volumes could become an increasingly important test for the company.

With cumulative production reaching six figures, Camaçari has become BYD's first vehicle manufacturing base outside Asia to cross the 100,000-unit mass production mark. The milestone offers an early indication of whether the automaker can turn Brazil into both a major production hub and an export base for its broader Latin American expansion.
