Shanghai October 8 (Gasgoo.com) 20,000 new energy vehicles will be put into operation in China by the end of this year, according to a report released by the Ministry of Science and Technology on development of clean energy technology, Shanghai Securities News reported Friday.

The report shows that the Chinese government has taken a strong stand to support development of new energy vehicles. By the end of 2009, China had put nearly 5,000 new energy vehicles, including more than 70 models, into trials in 13 cities in public transportation, taxi, postal, sanitation and other public services.

The pilot project has greatly improved private capital investment in R&D of battery system and drive motors. By 2011, China should have the capability of producing 150,000 vehicles and key auto parts.

The report also shows that more than 1 million new energy vehicles will hit the road by 2015, and by the year 2020, China's new energy vehicle market will reach ten million level, while at the same time completing the strategic transformation of China's auto industry.

The Chinese government has so far granted subsidies worth 970 million yuan ($145 million) to promote new energy vehicles in the country, said Zhang Laiwu, vice minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
