Gasgoo Munich-On April 20, BYD's Ocean Series launched the 2026 Seal 05 EV and Seal 05 DM-i. The EV variant debuts in three trims priced between 119,900 and 145,900 yuan, while the DM-i hybrid offers five options ranging from 97,900 to 127,900 yuan. Far more than a routine annual refresh, the upgrades are substantial enough to qualify as a generational overhaul.
Within the Ocean Series' rapidly expanding lineup, the Seal 05 holds a unique position. It is tasked with extending the Seal family's reach into the mainstream market while working alongside the Seal 06 to prop up the network's SUV sales. With this update—marked by a significant boost in capability and a more competitive price point—the Seal 05 is finally revealing its hand.
A Seal 05 with its weaknesses addressed is a force to be reckoned with
First, the EV version. Built on the e-Platform 3.0 Evo with a rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive layout, it features the second-generation Blade battery and BYD's flash-charging tech. At room temperature, charging from 10% to 97% takes just 9 minutes; even in freezing conditions as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius, it requires only an additional 3 minutes. Range options stand at 540 km and 630 km under CLTC standards, paired with motor outputs of 200 kW and 240 kW.
The chassis employs front MacPherson and rear five-link independent suspension, marking the debut of the iTAC 2.0 intelligent torque control system. For storage, the EV variant offers a 600-liter trunk and a 110-liter front trunk, with electronic release coming standard.

Turning to the DM-i version, it utilizes BYD's fifth-generation DM technology, combining a 1.5-liter plug-in hybrid engine producing 74 kW with a drive motor delivering up to 120 kW.
Battery options include 26.6 kWh and 34.3 kWh units, delivering CLTC pure-electric ranges of 220 km and 305 km, respectively. With a full tank and charge, combined range hits 2,105 km, while NEDC fuel consumption drops to just 3.1 liters per 100 km. The chassis uses front MacPherson and rear four-link independent suspension, with both trims equipped with the DiSus-C intelligent damping body control system.
Notably, the previous Seal 05 DM-i offered only 75 km and 115 km of electric range. The new model doubles those figures to 220 km and 305 km, while the starting price actually fell from the previous 102,800 yuan to 97,900 yuan. This strategy of delivering more for less is aggressive.
Buyers can optionally add a LiDAR unit to upgrade to the God's Eye B (DiPilot 300) driver-assist system for 9,900 yuan. The cockpit runs on DiLink 150 and features a 15.6-inch adaptive rotating floating screen, supporting four-zone voice recognition.
Aesthetically, the new models adopt the "Ocean Design" language, unifying the styling of the DM-i and EV variants for the first time. The front features a closed grille with a full-width LED light strip and C-shaped headlights, while the rear gets a new wave-style full-width taillight. New body colors include Seashell Pink and Coral Orange.
Dimensions measure 4,620 mm by 1,860 mm by 1,630 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,770 mm. Compared to the previous DM-i version, the wheelbase has grown by 58 mm, significantly improving rear legroom.
Inside, traditional gear stalks are gone, replaced by a column-mounted shifter and a new three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel. The central screen is upgraded to the 15.6-inch adaptive rotating display, while the console gains a 50-watt wireless charging pad and physical buttons.
Taken together, the 2026 Seal 05 delivers systematic upgrades across powertrain, range, chassis, intelligent driving, and cockpit comfort—a qualitative leap over its predecessor. In the A-SUV segment, this configuration package poses a serious competitive threat.
The "Twin Seal" Synergy
In terms of market timing, a clear synergy is emerging within the Seal family. Since its launch in July 2025, the Seal 06 surpassed 30,000 units in its first full sales month and has since held steady at that high volume. It hit the 100,000-unit production mark within 100 days, with cumulative sales exceeding 160,000 units in 2025.
The Seal 06's success has set a benchmark for the family: in the 150,000-yuan class, the strategy of standardizing God's Eye C driver assistance and DiSus-C suspension has proven effective.
Now, the 2026 Seal 05 brings DiSus-C and advanced intelligent driving down to the 100,000-to-130,000-yuan bracket—essentially a precise replication and downward extension of the Seal 06's winning formula.
The previous-generation Seal 05 required time to build market recognition. In 2025, cumulative sales of the Seal 05 DM-i reached roughly 30,000 units, while the EV variant managed monthly peaks of 14,000 units.
Entering early 2026, sales of the older model dipped—a typical pause as consumers await a new product. With the official arrival of the 2026 Seal 05, however, core upgrades like doubled range, a price cut of nearly 5,000 yuan, and standard advanced intelligent driving have quickly captured consumer attention.

Beyond the product itself, BYD's Ocean Series continues to strengthen its channel and service capabilities. By the end of 2025, the network covered nearly all prefecture-level cities nationwide. Since the Seal 05 shares the same after-sales and parts systems as the Seal 06, buyers enjoy identical service convenience.
Meanwhile, BYD refined its sales structure in the first quarter of 2026, establishing a dedicated team of product specialists for the Seal family. This helps consumers clearly distinguish the positioning of the Seal 05 from similar models in the Dynasty Series. These improvements in soft capabilities provide strong support to the hardware upgrades.
From a broader strategic perspective, the Seal family is emerging as the Ocean Series' third growth engine, following the Seagull and Seal. With the addition of the 2026 Seal 05, the family's product density and competitiveness in the 100,000-to-160,000-yuan segment—the market's largest—are significantly bolstered.
It is reasonable to expect that once the product transition is complete, Seal 05 sales will quickly rebound to over 10,000 units per month. Together with the Seal 06, the family could target a combined monthly volume of 40,000 units.
The 2026 Seal 05 update is no mere tweak; it is a thorough reconstruction of value. By offering longer range, lower consumption, smarter features, and a more aggressive price, it is redefining the entry threshold for A-class plug-in hybrid and electric SUVs.
The Seal 06 has already demonstrated the massive appeal of "technological democratization" in the 150,000-yuan market. The Seal 05's mission is to successfully extend that logic down to the 100,000-yuan segment. Judging by its capabilities and early market feedback, this time, the Seal 05 is on solid ground.
