Gasgoo.com (Shanghai September 16) - Automobile manufacturers from all across the world are looking to get a piece of the pie that is the Chinese automobile market, with General Motor's European subsidiary Opel not being any exception. However, according to an official statement from GM's China branch, Opel will not becoming to China, yicai.com reported today.

The report comes in the face of reports circulating in the German media that Opel was planning to establish a Chinese factory with a production capability of 30,000 to 40,000 automobiles. However, according to an agreement signed between SAIC and GM, only Opel technology would be brought over to the country, while its vehicles would not be made in China.

Shanghai GM's Buick Regal is based on the Epsilon II platform, shared with the European Opel Insignia (pictured). The European Opel platforms are reportedly more competitive than its American and Japanese counterparts. Several Buick-branded vehicles are based on Opel designs, which is a key reason why GM is unwilling to sell Opel models in the country.
