General Motors Co's (GM.N) Cadillac is returning to production-car racing after a three-year absence, said Don Butler, the brand's marketing chief.

Cadillac's CTS-V series will be the base of the race car in the Sports Car Club of America World Challenge, which has a schedule of 10 production-car races in the United States and Canada from March to October next year.

Cadillac left the racing series as it went from the first-generation CTS to the second generation, Butler said on Monday.

Cadillac's CTS-V line, which includes a coupe, wagon and sedan, have 6.2-liter, V8 engines that deliver 556 horsepower.

The V-series is being advertised on television for the first time, Butler said.

Brands that have entered production cars in the racing series include BMW (BMWG.DE), Porsche AG (PSHG_p.DE), Chrysler's Dodge and its Viper car, Aston-Martin, and Volvo, now owned by Geely Automobile Holdings (0175.HK). Chrysler is managed by Italy's Fiat (FIA.MI).

Jim Campbell, GM chief for performance vehicles and motorsports, said what engineers learn on the track will help its production models.
