Shanghai, June 30 (Gasgoo.com) Godfrey Tsang, the Vice President of Toyota (China) Investment Co., Ltd, revealed to the media that Lexus' new strategy is to produce low-emission vehicles in China.
At the end of this year, Lexus will introduce two new models of low-emission vehicles to China to solve its problem of having too many vehicles with a displacement of over 3.0 liters. "Hybrid models with the engine displacement of 2,0 liters are also likely to enter the Chinese market in the near future,"said Godfrey Tsang.
For the time being, China has overtook Japan to become the world's second largest market for Lexus, right after the United States. Compared with Germany's traditional luxury cars, however, Lexus' influence of its brand image and sales in China is still weak.
There is a fierce discussion inside the Toyota company about how to deal with this situation and whether through local production in China or by way of introducing small displacement vehicles.
Local production in China is always the top choice for Germany's luxury cars, but it doesn't apply to Toyota's Lexus, considering it has to balance the partnership between its two joint ventures in China and its unsatisfactory sales may lead to higher cost of components certification.
Godfrey Tsang, who is mainly responsible for Lexus business in China, has been making great efforts to talk with the headquarters so as to enhance Lexus'performance in China and polish its brand image by getting their support in adding more low-emission vehicles.
