Shanghai, July 27 (Gasgoo.com) Vehicles manufactured by Shanghai GM, a joint venture between General Motors and SAIC Motor, will be fitted with the turbochargers from BorgWarner, a supplier of engineered automotive systems and components, media reported this week.

The 1.6l four-cylinder gasoline engine fitted into the Buick Excelle XT will be turbocharged by BorgWarner. Shanghai GM will also install the fuel-efficient engine with BorgWarner's turbocharger in the Chevrolet Cruze.

Using the turbocharger modified by BorgWarner and GM engineers, the Excelle engine can provide 181 hp and 235 Nm of torque between 1,980 and 5,400 rpm. A superboost function will make the torque increase to 266 Nm torque. Meanwhile, fuel consumption is kept at around 30mpg (7.8l/100 km).

The turbochargers to supply Shanghai GM will be manufactured by BorgWarner in Ningbo, a coastal city near Shanghai, at a facility operated by the supplier ever since 2004. BorgWarner Inc. is a U.S.-based worldwide auto industry components and parts supplier.

"China is participating in the global trend towards downsized turbocharged gasoline engines, making vehicles more fuel-efficient, more eco-friendly and more powerful," Roger Wood, BorgWarner vice president said in a statement.

For the first half of the year, GM's China sales surpassed, for the first time, its sales in its U.S. domestic market. Most of the GM cars sold in China are manufactured by Shanghai GM, or GM Shanghai.
