Gasgoo.com (Shanghai December 19) - Mercedes-Benz's Smart brand will be releasing a brand new four-door Smart in China in 2014, the Beijing Youth Daily reported today, citing a statement made at a recent promotional event for the brand at Beijing's Galaxy SOHO.

Smart previously released the Smart Forfour (pictured below) in 2006, however, production of the vehicle halted a few years later. The fact that Smart has selected China as one of the markets for release of its upcoming four-door variant is proof of the confidence the manufacturer has in the country.

According to pictures released at the event, the new Smart (pictured above) will be a crossover style vehicle measuring about one cm longer than the current Smart. The vehicle will reportedly make its earliest debut at next year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Smart's Chinese performance reached a new high last year. Its total sales this year have exceeded 15,000 units so far, equivalent to year-on-year growth of 41 percent.
