GAIG outlines new strategy for commercial vehicle

GAIG (Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group) will reconsider its commercial vehicle strategy and plans to expand its commercial vehicle production, according to Zeng Qinghong, general manager of the Group.

For a long time, GAIG has losing money in commercial vehicle business. The sales records of its commercial brands such as Guangzhou Isuzu, Guangzhou Denway Bus and Guangzhou YCA had lagged far behind that of passenger vehicles such as Guangzhou Honda and Guangzhou Toyota.

Currently GAIG has one partner in the commercial vehicle, Isuzu Motor, a Japanese auto maker. Due to lack of competitive models and relative high price, GAIG's commercial business has been in red for several years.

Now GAIG is seeking a new commercial vehicle partner to develop its commercial vehicle business. Its new partner is also an auto maker from Japan, Hino Motors a sub brand of Toyota, the largest automaker in Japan.

GAIG has submitted a report to NDRC (National Development and Reform Commission) in 2006, which stated that GAIG plans to increase its auto production capacity to 1,100,000 units by 2010, of which one third are commercial vehicles.
