Guangzhou Toyota to introduce a MPV model next year
Shanghai. January 2 (Gasgoo.com) – Guangzhou Toyota plans to introduce a MPV model after its second plant starts production next year, a senior official with Guangzhou Toyota said last week.
"We are going to introduce an MPV model after the second plant starts production in 2008,” said Yuan Zhongrong, deputy general manager of Guangzhou Toyota. “Previa is an option, but we have not decided on that.”
Previa is a seven-seat MPV, equipped with a 2.4 engine. Its maximum output is 170 hp/6000 rpm and maximum torque is 224Nm/4000 rpm. Currently the imported Previa MPV is sold at RMB 460,000 (USD 62,980) to RMB 520,000 (USD 71,200) in Chinese market.
Since Previa shares the same engine with Toyota Camry, it is very likely that Guangzhou Toyota will produce Previa on Camry’s production line. After all, Guangzhou Toyota does not have a MPV model to compete with Guangzhou Honda’s popular Odyssey.
Guangzhou Toyota is a joint venture of Toyota Motor and Guangzhou Automobile Co. The company sells about 15,000 Camrys per month.
It will start producing its second model, the Yaris, in the middle of 2008. The small car will carry engines from Tianjin FAW Toyota Automobile Co.
Yuan Zhongrong, vice president of Guangzhou Toyota, says the Camry contains about 77 percent local content by value, and the Yaris will have about 80 percent local parts.
He says Guangzhou Toyota now has about 100 tier-one suppliers, of which about 85 percent are Japanese. He says the company plans to raise the number of non-Japanese suppliers.
Yuan says Guangzhou Toyota will add one model into production each year in the coming several years.
Guangzhou Toyota is building its second assembly plant, which is expected to double its capacity to more than 400,000 units. The new plant will start production in early 2009.
