China may import over 360,000 vehicles in 2008

Shanghai. January (Gasgoo.com) – China may import over 360,000 vehicles this year, an increase of 20 percent from last year, said general manager of China Trading Center for Automobile Import.
 
"Global automakers may introduce more brands and more models to Chinese market because they take China as a promising market,” said Ding Hongxiang, general manager of China Trading Center for Automobile Import at China Summit Forum for Imported Automobiles.
 
The import of SUV vehicles will grow at a faster pace than that of sedan vehicles, Ding said. “More SUV models will be introduced to Chinese market in 2008.”
 
In the first 11 months of 2007, China imported 277,093 vehicles, up 37.6 percent year-on-year, according to Custom House statistics. China is expected to import a total number of 300,000 vehicles in 2007, an increase of more than 30 percent year-on-year.
 
In 2007, SUV is the fastest growing segment of the imported vehicles in Chinese market. In the first 11 months, China imported a total number of 126,659 SUV vehicles, up 65 percent from one year earlier and 81 percent of imported SUV vehicles are powered with 2.5 liter or even bigger displacement engines.
