Externally, the locally produced Volvo XC40 displays a striking resemblance to the imported model. Its front end gives a major nod to Norse mythology with its T-shaped running lights that are patterned after Thor's hammer. Other signature exterior parts such as the hexagonal grille and the L-shaped taillights are also quite unmistakable.

The China-made version measures 4,425mm long, 1,863mm wide and 1,652mm tall, the same as the outgoing imported model. Besides, the wheelbase spans 2,702 mm.

Inside the vehicle, the vehicle is still themed with Northern European simplicity. Part of niceties applied in the imported model still could be found in the new SUV, including the 12.3-inch full liquid crystal instrument panel, panoramic sunroof, keyless entry system and push-to-start button.

Besides, a series of intelligent driving assistance features such as the City Safety auto brake function, the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), the Pilot Assist and the Cross Traffic Alert (CTA), will still serve consumers who buy the China-made model.

Based on powertrain, the new XC40 is offered with three variants—T3, T4 and T5. The T3 model carries a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine that churns out 163hp and 265 N·m. The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine is available to both T4 and T5 versions, pumping out 190hp/300 N·m and 252hp/350 N·m for two variants respectively. The entire model series come standard with 8-speed automatic manual transmission.
