In 2021, 22.2% of the new passenger vehicles in China were equipped with L2 and below autonomous driving systems. Relating technologies such as ACC, AEB, LKS, and APA are already broadly used on mass production vehicles.
The Li Auto CEO’s proposal was backed by Miao Wei, the deputy director of the National Economic Affairs Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
The deputy director explained that the AEB system could significantly lower the collision rate caused by drivers not paying attention to the road. Casualties and death will therefore be reduced considerably. Furthermore, the AEB technology is mature and cost-effective, and should be considered a mandatory component of new vehicles.
Sources within the industry disclosed that Li Auto was considering making its AEB algorithm open-source to promote safety throughout the industry. Li Xiang said that the company’s AEB R&D team has hundreds of thousands of people, researching and validating over 10 million kilometers of mileage daily.
A Li Auto staff elaborated that every Li Auto user can be counted as an R&D member of its AEB algorithm, helping to iterate the technology with each use of the car. Although Li Auto has never pushed untested AEB software to users, every iteration session in shadow mode does not affect function compliance and car usage.
