WeRide greenlighted to operate China's first paid autonomous shuttle service

Beijing (Gasgoo)- On December 30, 2023, WeRide, in partnership with Guangzhou Bus Group, launched China's inaugural paid commercial shuttle service in Guangzhou, the provincial capital of Guangdong Province.

This milestone follows their joint acquisition of the intelligent connected vehicle demonstration application qualification in Guangzhou's Huangpu District on December 21. The approval allows the duo to charge fees for the autonomous microcirculation passenger vehicles (Robobus) service, marking the nation's first commercial license for factory-installed mass-produced Robobus operations.

WeRide and Guangzhou Bus Group initiated a fleet of 50 Robobuses for commercial operations, serving the central areas of Guangzhou. These routes traverse key zones, including prominent Guangzhou landmarks, encompassing five Robobus routes previously opened for road tests.

In a groundbreaking move, the collaboration will inaugurate the nation's first autonomous Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route. Additionally, two existing routes will be extended to offer nighttime services, establishing the country's inaugural autonomous overnight bus routes.

Passengers can board the Robubus by swiping their Yang Cheng Tong transit card (supporting Yang Cheng Tong fees, mobile QR code boarding, and NFC payments). Seating is limited to one person per seat, no standing allowed, and minors can board only when accompanied by a guardian.

During the trial run of the nighttime Robobus routes, no fares will be charged. Details regarding the specific fare structure will be announced separately. Citizens interested in riding the nighttime routes can pre-book via a dedicated mini-program on WeChat.

WeRide's successful Robobus implementation in Guangzhou has been replicated in 19 cities globally, including Beijing, Wuxi, Nanjing, Abu Dhabi, and Singapore.
