Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - According to statistics collected by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China depends on foreign countries for 55.2 percent of its petroleum needs. Some experts predict that number to rise to 65 to 70 percent by 2020. Therefore, just how to cut down on oil costs has become a matter of great importance for many in the country. Gasgoo.com (Chinese) has compiled a list of the most fuel efficient and gas guzzling SUVs in the country, as below.

FAW Toyota leads the list of most serious gas-guzzling Chinese SUVs, with its Land Cruiser and Prado SUVs placing first and second, respectively. Only four other foreign joint venture models made the list: the Guangqi Toyota Highlander, Beijing Hyundai Tucson, Dongfeng Nissan Murano and Zhengzhou Nissan Paladin. All of these vehicles managed respectable sales this year, with the Prado (17,100 units), Highlander (74,900 units) and Tucson (43,300 units) standing out.

The remainder of the list was composed of domestic SUVs, with SAIC's new Roewe W5 heading the list with a consumption rate similar to the Prado. Dongfeng Yulon's Luxgen7, which also debuted this year, was close behind. Entries from BAIC, Changfeng Liebao, Jiangling, Shuanghuan, Hawtai and Great Wall also showed up on the list.

Meanwhile, the list of most fuel efficient SUVs was mainly filled with domestic vehicles, with Shanghai VW's Tiguan (114,100 sales this year) and Dongfeng Nissan's Qashqai (89,600 sales) being the only two foreign joint venture models that made the cut.

JAC's Rein headed the list, followed closely by the Great Wall M1. Hawtai, Chery, Zotye and Brilliance also had models with notably low fuel consumption rates. Among the models listed, Brilliance's Zhonghua V5 and Hawtai's B35 have been on the market for less than a month. The Gonow Aoosed G5 also made its debut this year.
