Tesla exports 97,496 China-made vehicles to 10 plus countries, regions in first 8 months

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- For the first eight months of 2021, Tesla exported 97,496 made-in-China vehicles to more than 10 countries and regions, including such developed ones as the U.S., Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and several countries in Europe, Tesla China business unit said on Sept. 18.

Tesla's monthly export volume of China-built vehicles hit a record high of 31,379 units in August, which accounted for 71% of Tesla's total wholesales of China-made cars.

According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), China exported around 950,000 vehicles for the first half of 2021, representing a 118% year-on-year surge. The semi-annual exports of new energy vehicles (NEVs) rocketed 151.3% from a year ago to 173,000 units.

Of the NEVs exported in the Jan.-Jun. period, nearly 30% were contributed by Tesla, said Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the CPCA.

Tesla noted it expanded the sales of China-made vehicles to the aforementioned developed countries in a bid to bring “high-quality and high-value” made-in-China cars for global premium car markets.

Tesla said last month that it has shifted its “export hub” from Fremont Factory to Shanghai Gigafactory.

“Due to strong U.S. demand and global average cost optimization, we have completed the transition of Gigafactory Shanghai as the primary vehicle export hub,” Tesla stated in its Q2 2021 results.

Meanwhile, Tesla is speeding up the localization progress for the Shanghai factory. By the end of 2020, 86% of auto parts for Tesla's vehicles made in Shanghai were locally sourced in China.
