CATL teams up with UL Solutions for applications of energy storage systems, power batteries

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Chinese battery giant CATL announced via its WeChat account it signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) on Jan. 17 with UL Solutions, a global leader in applied safety science, for the strategic cooperation on promoting safer and more reliable applications of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Per the agreement, CATL will kick off the process to achieve UL Solutions WTDP (witness test data program) status, so as to conduct tests under UL 9540A, the Standard for Test Method for Evaluating Thermal Runaway Fire Propagation in Battery Energy Storage Systems. Once receiving WTDP designation by UL Solutions, CATL will be allowed to use its own laboratory facilities to conduct the UL 9540A tests under the supervision of UL Solutions' personnel, in a bid to further improve the testing efficiency, and short the period for battery products going into the market from the laboratory.

As China's first company to launch the UL Solutions WTDP initiative for UL 9540A, CATL features diversified testing and verification capabilities, and has been qualified by UL Solutions for the tests under UL1973 (the Standard for Batteries for Use in Stationary and Motive Auxiliary Power Applications), UL 9540 (the Standard for Energy Storage Systems and Equipment), and UL 2580 (the Standard for Batteries for Use in Electric Vehicles), said the company.

CATL noted that the EnerOne, its flagship outdoor liquid cooling battery system, and EnerC, its containerized liquid-cooling battery system, have been certified to the UL 9540A standard, making CATL became China's first company to receive test report of such kind in cell, module, unit and installation level by UL Solutions.

Moreover, the duo will carry out in-depth cooperation in further exploring lithium-ion battery safety, and offer insights towards the development of BESS and EV battery standards. They will also co-explore carbon footprint reduction and other sustainability endeavors.
