Car and City: 3 BMW’s models among top 10 PV models in Shanghai by Jan. 2022 registrations
In January 2022, there were 61,105 China-made passenger vehicles (PVs) registered in Shanghai, representing an 18% year-on-year decrease, while also showing a 17.5% month-on-month drop, according to the data compiled by Gasgoo Auto Research Institute (GARI).
By Jan. registrations of China-built PVs, Shanghai ranked highest among cities on the Chinese mainland.
Among the top 10 auto brands by Jan. homemade PV registrations in the megacity, Volkswagen (VW) was the best-performing one with up to 77% of registrations contributed by oil-fueled cars. Roewe and BYD were the only two Chinese indigenous brands. Notably, the three German premium brands—BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi—all cracked the top 10 brands rankings. Tesla ranked 10th as the unique one with only all-electric vehicles for sale.
From the angle of products, the top 3 domestically-built PV models by Jan. registrations in Shanghai were the Lavida, the BMW 3 Series, and the GLC, two of which were under premium brands. Apart from the 3 Series, BMW had another two models (the 5 Series and the X3) among the top 10 models list. The Song PLUS DM-i and the Roewe RX5 were the only two from China's self-owned brands.
In January 2022, the registrations of locally-built new energy passenger vehicles (NEPVs) in Shanghai stood at 19,246 units, sliding 10.4% from a year earlier, while also plunging 40% from the previous month. Specifically, the megacity's Jan. NEPV registrations were composed of 12,467 all-electric vehicles and 6,779 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (including 832 range-extended electric vehicles).
BYD topped other auto brands with 4,762 NEPVs registered in Shanghai in January, 60.6% of which were contributed by plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Three key Chinese NEV startups—NIO, XPeng and Li Auto—all entered the top 10 brands rankings by Jan. registrations. Ranking fifth, NIO was outsold by Tesla by only 19 units.
Among the top 10 popular homemade NEPV models in Shanghai in January, the Model Y was still the champion. BYD's products occupied four spots. Besides, the aforesaid three Chinese startups all got one model on the top 10 list.
