Nissan Motor Co said it plans to invest about 12.92 million pounds ($21 million) over the next four years to expand engine output at its Sunderland plant in the UK.
Nissan, Japan's third-largest automaker, will upgrade and install new facilities at the U.K. plant with the goal of producing 65,000 engines annually from May 2010, the company said earlier this week.
With the retooling, Nissan will manufacture 2-liter engines for use in several models including the Qashqai and Qashqai +2 SUVs, which are also produced at the plant, the company said in a statement.
Nissan has been importing the 2-liter engine into the UK from Japan. The Sunderland plant currently manufactures 1.2-liter and 1.4-liter gasoline engines for subcompacts.
