Johnson Controls to build battery plant in China

Shanghai, December 17 (Gasgoo.com) Johnson Controls Inc said on Tuesday it plans to invest about $90 million to build an automotive battery plant China, Reuters reported.

Construction of the plant, located in Changxing County in Zhejiang province, is scheduled to start in January, the company said in a statement.

With an annual production capacity of 4 million auto batteries, the plant is expected to start production in 2010, it said. Currently the plant is still subject to government approval.

Johnson Controls supplies lead acid batteries for passenger cars, light trucks and utility vehicles. It has an existing battery plant in Shanghai focusing on maintenance-free batteries and other high-performance power batteries.

The company also runs a joint venture with Chinese car maker Chery Automobile making auto interiors. It is the third biggest auto parts maker in North America.
