From Reuters| April 26 , 2010 10:01 BJT

Chinese car maker Chery Automobile is interested in taking a stake in the solar energy business of Taiwanese LCD panel maker AU Optronics (2409.TW), Taiwan's Economic Daily News reported on Monday.

Any stake would be the first taken by a mainland entity in Taiwan's solar industry, and would allow AU to participate in China's developing solar energy market and boost capital, the paper said.

The chairmen of AU and Chery Automobile are set to meet later on Monday, the paper said, without giving more details.

Chery, China's largest independent car maker, recently signed an agreement with U.S. electric vehicle infrastructure firm Better Place to collaborate on electric vehicle technology.

AU's solar energy businesses includes an investment in Japan-based solar cell technology firm M.Setek.
