Hyundai to make 80% vehicles sold in US locally

By next year about 80% of the vehicles Korean automaker Hyundai sells in the United States will be built here, the CEO of the automaker’s U.S. arm told CNNMoney.

“I’m going to build my three best selling cars in the U.S.,” head of Hyundai Motor America John Krafcik said. “Ford builds its best selling car in Mexico.”

The Korean automaker produced 24,111 models of the popular Sonata sedan last month, an 80 percent jump from the 13,395 made in July.

The facility only made one Santa Fe last month as it phases out operations of the crossover SUV as it prepares to move its production to the company’s Georgia plant.
