Beijing Hyundai recalls almost 100000 Elantras in China due to airbag problem

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai June 11) - Beijing Hyundai has decided to issue a recall order for 97,452 Yuedong Elantras, Xinhua reported today, citing an announcement made by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. The recall, which begun yesterday, will target 2008 model year cars manufactured between mid-March 2008 and late January 2010.

There is concern that the airbags of the Elantras (pictured) in question may spontaneously deploy when the car is parked or cruising slowly. AQSIQ's Defective Products Management Center has already received several complaints from Hyundai owners of such incidents occurring. The Center, having enlisted the aid of several experts, then conducted an extensive survey. According to the results of the inspection, the problem poses a real safety risk and warrants an automobile recall.

Beijing Hyundai will replace the Airbag Control Unit of all recalled vehicles free of charge. AQSIQ has also begun inspection of other Hyundai models. If similar problems are happened to be found in those models, they will also be recalled.
