Gasgoo.com (Shanghai November 12) - Following construction of its new engine factory in Sichuan, FAW Volkswagen's transmission factory in Jilin's capital of Changchun has begun producing VW MQ200 gearboxes, Beijing News reported today. The Changchun site is designed to be able to produce up to 450,000 MQ200 gearboxes.

The MQ200 gearboxes are used in 1.4 L and 1.6 L VW models, including the New Jetta, New Bora, New Sagitar and Golf. According to FAW-VW officials, VW will retain all intellectual property rights to gearboxes manufactured at the site. Changchun is the fifth city worldwide to produce MQ200 gearboxes. Whether or not Changchun-produced gearboxes will be used for FAW's own brand Besturn vehicles has yet to be confirmed.

FAW-VW Board Chairman and President An Tiecheng stated that the site will play a major role in improving the joint venture's overall manufacturing quality and boosting its overall competitiveness in the passenger automobile market. Due to the large number of new models FAW-VW has recently introduced as well as growing consumer demand, being able to produce gearboxes in the country as opposed to having to procure them from overseas will be a major boon to the JV.

FAW-VW already possesses facilities in Changchun manufacturing EA111 engines, O2K manual gearboxes and MQ250 manual gearboxes.
