Mazda Motor Corp. is recalling 161,400 Mazda6 sedans in the United States over defective door latches.

The recalls affect Mazda6 models built before Aug. 24, 2012, for the 2009-2013 model years.

Mazda said that the door latch screws can become loose and cause the side doors to open while the vehicle is in motion.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation in May 2013 after receiving several reports of the problem.

Mazda said the problem was a result of improper tightening of screws at the factory or uneven door surfaces.

Dealers are instructed to remove the latch screws on all doors, apply a thread-locking adhesive to the door screws and retighten them with the proper amount of torque. Dealers will replace any missing screws free of charge.

No accidents or injuries have been reported, Mazda said.

The recall is expected to begin by Oct. 18, 2013, the agency said.
