Shanghai. February 21 (Gasgoo.com) - Two days after an official announcement to levy full consumption tax on fuel oil and naphtha, Chinese government officials are now talking about emission tax, local newspaper Harbin Daily reported today.
Officials from the Law and Regulation Office of State Bureau of Environmental Protection confirmed that three central government agencies, including Ministry of Finance, State Bureau of Environmental Protection and State Administration of Taxation, are studying a plan on tailpipe emission tax on automobile users.
This new tax, if put in place, would amount to another burden on China's private car users. "With all taxes piling up, we can hardly afford for a car now," a Beijing car owner complained.
But auto experts say the policy will encourage automaker to develop environmental friendly cars and therefore benefit the automobile industry in the long run.
Currently vehicle consumers in China are obliged to pay a number of taxes and fees, including insurance, road maintenance tax, vehicle/ship ownership tax, traffic congestion fees (Shanghai only) and full consumption tax.
