Chrysler targets China in global drive
Chrysler will launch the first Dodge-branded vehicle will in China this year, according to an email statement yesterday. The company didn't elaborate which model, or whether it will be imported or produced in China.
The car maker, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, is also setting up a distribution network throughout China with both existing and new dealers.
The Dodge will join two other company vehicles already in China, the Jeep and Chrysler.
The move is aimed to help it further break into the world's second-largest auto market.
"The Chinese consumer has a fever for cars," said Simon Elliott, president and chief executive officer of Chrysler Group (China) Sales Ltd.
"All three brands available in China would lay a solid foundation for expanding our production portfolio and is a milestone for our global development."
Chrysler started localized production of its Chrysler 300C sedan under partnership with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co Ltd last year.
The struggling automobile maker last week also started selling its imported Chrysler PT Cruiser in China, following by another Chrysler vehicle and three new Jeep vehicles to be launched nationwide this year.
The company is also shifting some of its production into China to rev up sales and cut costs.
It has signed a letter of intent with Wuhu-based Chery to produce small cars for global markets.
The Chrysler unit dragged down the profit of its parent company amid soaring gasoline prices. DaimlerChrysler said on Wednesday that its fourth-quarter earnings plunged on weaker demand at the Chrysler unit, which saw sales fall seven percent.
The same day Chrysler announced the restructuring plan, which includes cutting 130,000 workers and closing plants.
DaimlerChrysler AG said it may also seek partners for its troubled Chrysler arm. It is the first indication that the parent may sell off its offshoot entirely.
