China takes an important step towards the popularization of smart cars

China officially started research and trial work of the 77-81GHz millimeter-wave vehicle radar and connected communication LTE-V technology frequency division on November 18th and 23th respectively. The work is led by Telematics Industry Application Alliance (TIAA).

With the development of smart cats, millimeter-wave vehicle radar has become an important part in vehicle collision warning, adaptive cruise control, ADAS and self-driving technologies. According to relevant statistic data, the global millimeter-wave vehicle radar market has a total shipment volume of 19m units, and it is expected that the data will reach 72m units by 2020. And the compound growth rate will be about 24% in the future five years and the total market value will exceed RMB 20b.

In 2016, Chinese government officially starts the WRC-19 1.12 topic work. As an important part of smart cars and intelligent transportation, frequency division on millimeter-wave vehicle radar is also a technology that causes Chinese government’s close attention.

Besides, vehicle-to-vehicle communication LTE-V technology frequency division is a more important job. Many technological staff from auto parts providers once said that, our country needs to open some frequency channels to achieve Vehicle-to-vehicle communication, but the ranges cannot overlap or get close to secret channels or military frequency ranges.

Luckily, great importance is attached to the smart car technologies by auto industry, academic circle and institutes together. For example, General Motors is stipulating V2X application standards with Tsinghua University and Chana Auto, which is planned to be released at the end of this year. Currently, V2V or V2X has the most basic applications. For example, transportation lights information will be displayed in GM or Audi’s control panels. According to the information, drivers will speed up or brake vehicles in advance. But V2X’s research work is still concentrated in communication field. We can expect that one day the V2X will be popular among smart cars.
