Source: Joyson Electronics receives RMB220 mln order for China-built Tesla Model Y

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Ningbo Joyson Electronics Corp. (Joyson Electronics) has recently received a RMB220 million control electronics order from Tesla for the production of the Model Y, according to a local media report. Products will be directly delivered to Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory 3 from Joyson Electronics' Ningbo plant.

In early February, Joyson was given a statement of intent to cooperate which said the U.S.-based EV manufacturer intended to let Joyson be a supplier for the made-in-China Model 3 and Model Y. According to the deal, the subsidiary Shanghai Lingang Joyson Safety Systems Co.,Ltd. would offer Tesla such parts as airbags, safety belts, steering wheels and car window switches. The deal is worth RMB1.5 billion.

Joyson Electronics is a Chinese auto parts supplier focusing R&D and production of intelligent driving system, automotive safety system, IoV technologies and NEV power management system, etc. Earlier this month, it announced that it would provide key components to the ID.4, an EV model developed based on Volkswagen's MEB platform.

Tesla kicked off the project of the China-built Model Y at its Shanghai plant on Jan. 7. Consumers in North America have been available to take delivery of the all-electric mid-sized SUVs. According to Tesla’s China official website, the Model Y is likely to be sold at RMB488,000 (Long Range) and RMB535,000 (Performance) in this country. The second China-made model is said to be delivered in 2020.

Tesla has previously said it wants to localize its entire supply chain in China by the end of this year. Thus it is pushing the cooperation with more Chinese indigenous suppliers. Aside from Joyson Electronics, battery giant CATL confirmed on Feb. 3 it would provide Tesla with lithium-ion power batteries from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2022.
