DEEPAL, StarPower begin operation of joint semiconductor plant

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On August 20, DEEPAL, an NEV brand under China Changan Automobile Group, and Chinese semiconductor producer StarPower announced the start of production at their joint venture, Chongqing Anda Semiconductor. The launch represents a significant step forward in automotive-grade power semiconductor development and strengthens the supply of critical components for China's fast-growing new energy vehicle (NEV) industry.

Chongqing Anda Semiconductor will focus on producing advanced automotive-grade power devices, a core technology for EV performance and safety. StarPower, already one of China's leading suppliers of high-power modules, supplied components for over 1.2 million NEVs in 2022. The new joint venture is expected to reinforce its industry position while giving DEEPAL a reliable, in-house supply of critical chips.

From an industry perspective, the facility carries wider implications. For DEEPAL, it enhances vertical integration of its supply chain and provides essential support as the company pursues its million-unit sales ambitions. More broadly, the model highlights how deeper collaboration between automakers and semiconductor firms could reshape the NEV sector's approach to innovation and resilience.

As China's auto industry shifts focus from fierce domestic competition to global expansion, closer cooperation with chipmakers offers a safeguard against supply chain vulnerabilities. Strengthening control at the semiconductor level is increasingly seen as crucial to overcoming long-standing bottlenecks.

Meanwhile, DEEPAL is accelerating its international expansion under its "1+5+2" market strategy. By 2025, the brand expects to be active in 66 countries and regions, with a goal of reaching 90 by year-end. The new semiconductor plant will not only secure its domestic operations but also underpin its global ambitions.
