Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On July 29, 2025, Chinese autonomous driving technology company WeRide and global mobility platform Uber announced the launch of Robotaxi services in partnership with the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) in Abu Dhabi. The rollout expands Robotaxi operations to the bustling Al Reem and Al Maryah islands.

The service expansion is expected to double order volumes, now reaching nearly half of Abu Dhabi's core urban areas. In addition to Al Reem and Al Maryah islands, the coverage extends to Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and major highway routes to and from Zayed International Airport.

Since WeRide and Uber launched Robotaxi services in Abu Dhabi in December 2024, the fleet size has tripled. The companies plan to scale the fleet to several hundred vehicles and further extend operations to Khalifa City, Masdar City, and additional districts by the end of the year.

WeRide and Uber now operate the largest Robotaxi fleet in the Middle East, using WeRide's latest-generation GXR model. The purpose-built, mass-production Robotaxi accommodates up to five passengers and is designed for high-volume operations. Each vehicle completes dozens of trips per 12-hour shift, with the average journey exceeding six kilometers.

Starting the announcement date, passengers in Abu Dhabi can book Robotaxi rides through the Uber and TXAI apps in the newly added service zones.

Al Reem and Al Maryah islands are among Abu Dhabi's busiest and most densely populated areas, blending finance, residential, and commercial activity. Successfully operating in these complex urban environments highlights WeRide's capability to deploy Robotaxis at scale and positions Abu Dhabi as a regional leader in intelligent mobility.

In parallel, WeRide is conducting fully driverless Robotaxi trials in Abu Dhabi, with plans to open driverless operations to the public in the coming months.
