China's power battery installations rise in July 2025 despite MoM dip

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- China's power battery installations reached 55.9 GWh in July, down 4% from June but up 34.3% year-on-year, according to the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance ("CAPBIIA"). Ternary lithium batteries accounted for 10.9 GWh, or 19.6% of the total, rising 1.9% month-on-month but falling 3.8% from a year earlier. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries dominated with 44.9 GWh, representing 80.4% of the total, a 5.3% drop from June but a robust 49.0% increase year-on-year.

In July, 33 power battery manufacturers in the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) market had their batteries installed onto vehicles, six fewer than a year earlier. The top two producers delivered a combined 34.9 GWh, representing 62.5% of total installations, while the top five accounted for 44.9 GWh, or 80.3%. The top 10 reached 52.7 GWh, making up 94.3% of the market — down 1.3 percentage points from the same month last year.

From January to July in 2025, cumulative power battery installations totaled 355.4 GWh, up 45.1% year-on-year. Ternary battery installations over the period reached 66.5 GWh, making up 18.7% of the total and down 9.7% year-on-year. LFP batteries, at 288.9 GWh, accounted for 81.3% and surged 68.8% compared to the same period last year.

For the Jan.-Jul. period, the NEV market saw installations from 48 battery makers, three fewer than in the same period of 2024. The leading two suppliers provided 233.9 GWh in total, taking a 65.8% share, while the top five recorded 291 GWh, or 81.9%. The top 10 delivered 334.9 GWh, giving them a 94.2% share, 1.7 percentage points lower year-on-year.

In July, China's combined output of power and other batteries was 133.8 GWh, an increase of 3.6% from June and 44.3% from a year earlier.

For the first seven months of 2025, cumulative battery output reached 831.1 GWh, representing year-on-year soar of 57.5%.

Total battery sales in July came to 127.2 GWh, down 3.2% month-on-month but up 47.8% year-on-year. Power batteries accounted for 91.1 GWh, or 71.6% of total sales, slipping 3.1% from June but surging 45.8% year-on-year. Other battery types reached 36.1 GWh, representing 28.4% of sales, down 3.4% month-on-month but up 52.9% from the previous year.

For the first seven months of the year, combined battery sales totaled 786.2 GWh, up 60.6% year-on-year. Power batteries made up 576.6 GWh, or 73.3% of the total, rising 50.6% year-on-year, while other batteries totaled 209.6 GWh, accounting for 26.7% and nearly doubling with a 96.2% hike.

Battery exports in July totaled 23.2 GWh, down 4.7% from June but up 35.4% year-on-year, representing 18.3% of monthly sales. Power battery exports stood at 14.8 GWh, or 63.7% of the total, falling 6.7% month-on-month but jumping 48.4% year-on-year. Exports of other batteries reached 8.4 GWh, accounting for 36.3% of the total, down 0.9% from June but up 17.4% from last year.

Over the first seven months of the year, battery exports totaled 150.5 GWh, an spike of 53.1% year-on-year, accounting for 19.1% of total sales in the period. Power battery exports reached 96.4 GWh, or 64.1% of the total, up 29.4% year-on-year. Other battery exports rose sharply to 54.1 GWh, representing 35.9% of the total and more than doubling with a 127.1% growth.
